Exploration of Criterion-Referenced Foreign Language Assessment

Abstract: This article first defines criterion-referenced foreign language assessment. It proceeds with a review of its current status and existing problems. Advice is given at the end on how to tackle these problems. The suggestions include: developing China’s Standards of English to better suit the needs of the nation; creating quality standards for foreign language testing to assure test quality and appropriateness; reforming and refining the current foreign language testing system; and driving forward research on formative assessment to improve student-centered learning and foster learner autonomy.
