Constructing the Writing Subscales of the China's Standards of English Language Ability: From Theories to Practices

  Abstract:

  Writing proficiency, as a quint essential component of English language proficiency, plays a pivotal role for English tests, teaching material compilation and syllabus design in China. Foregrounding the characteristics of the writing scales in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and Canadian Language Benchmarks, this paper reviews the prevailing models and frameworks related to writing ability. On the basis of that, theoretical underpinnings of the writing sub-scales of the China’s Standards of English Language Ability (CSE) are detailed. In addition, light is also shed on the praxes of how the writing sub-scales are constructed and what parameters they include.
