Applying CSE to English Formative Assessment in Elementary and Secondary Schools: Cases of CSE Writing Scale Applications

  Abstract:

  Formative assessment (FA) is a critical part of foreign language testing and assessment. However, English FA in elementary and secondary schools in China seemingly lags behind both in practical operation and academic research, in particular no universal language ability standards available to guide its praxes. This paper proposes general steps of applying China’s Standards of English (CSE) to FA in elementary and secondary schools, and with cases of CSE Writing Scale applications to peer assessment and learning contracts, discusses the paradigms and pathways of CSE applications to English FA. The paper might provide new perspectives for effective English FA in elementary and secondary schools.
